Category-Specific Requirements

Each product type has unique North American standards and compliance details.

North America LED Track Light
UL 1574 / UL 1598 / 3-WIRE H-TYPE

LED Track Lights

North American track lighting requires compatibility with 3-wire H-type track systems (Halo, Juno, Lightolier standards). Commercial installations commonly use 277V circuits, while residential uses 120V. Ground continuity and load ratings are critical safety requirements.

  • 3-wire H-type track compatibility (Halo/Juno/Lightolier)
  • 120V residential / 277V commercial dual voltage options
  • Ground continuity through track adapter mandatory
  • 20A circuit limit (2400W @ 120V) — per-fixture wattage marking
  • UL 1574 specific standard for track lighting systems
  • DLC requires CRI ≥ 80, R9 > 0 for rebate eligibility

EU Difference: 3-phase 4-wire track (Global/Uni standard) at 230V/400V. Track heads are NOT interchangeable between NA and EU systems.

North America LED Pendant Light
UL 1598 / UL 2108 / SUSPENDED

LED Pendant & Suspended Lights

Suspended LED fixtures for North America must comply with UL 1598 for luminaires and UL 2108 for low-voltage lighting systems. Chain, cable, and rod suspension methods each have specific load and safety requirements. Canopy mounting must support fixture weight plus safety factor.

  • UL 1598 Listed for luminaire safety
  • UL 2108 for low-voltage pendant systems (if applicable)
  • Canopy/J-box rated for fixture weight × 5 safety factor
  • Chain/cable suspension with proper swivels and strain relief
  • Sloped ceiling adapters required for angled installations
  • 0-10V or TRIAC dimming compatible with US control systems

EU Difference: EN 60598-2-1 standard. DALI-2 dimming dominant. Different suspension hardware standards (EN 60598-2-17). No UL 2108 equivalent.

North America LED Linear Track Light
UL 1598 / DLC PREMIUM / LINEAR

LED Linear & Strip Track Lights

Linear LED fixtures for North American commercial spaces must meet DLC Premium standards for utility rebates. These are commonly used in offices, retail, and warehouses where continuous run lighting is preferred. Integration with building management systems requires 0-10V or DALI protocol support.

  • DLC Premium: ≥140 lm/W for maximum rebate eligibility
  • LM-80 testing with L70 ≥ 50,000 hours report
  • Continuous run capability with seamless junctions
  • 0-10V dimming standard (Lutron/Leviton compatible)
  • UGR < 19 for office applications (IES TM-15/RP-1)
  • Surface mount, suspended, or wall mount options

EU Difference: EN 60598-2-1 / EN 12464 for office lighting. DALI-2 standard. UGR < 19 mandatory per EN 12464. Different mounting systems (pendant vs surface).

North America LED Power Driver
UL 8750 / CLASS 2 / CLASS P

LED Power Drivers

LED drivers for the North American market must meet strict safety and performance standards. UL 8750 covers LED equipment, while Class 2 and Class P ratings determine installation flexibility and replacement options without re-certification.

  • UL 8750 Listed for LED applications
  • Class 2 output (≤60V DC, ≤100W) for no-junction-box installs
  • Class P driver for field replacement without re-certification
  • 120-277V universal input standard for commercial
  • FCC Part 15 compliance for EMI/RFI emissions
  • 0-10V dimming protocol (Lutron/Leviton compatible)

EU Difference: EN 61347-1/EN 61347-2-13 standard. DALI-2 dimming dominant. SELV (≤50V AC or 120V DC) instead of Class 2.

North America LED Downlights
UL 1598 / IC-RATED / TITLE 24

LED Downlights

Recessed downlights face the strictest requirements in North America. IC rating and air-tight compliance are critical for residential and California markets. Title 24 / JA8 mandates high efficacy and CRI for the largest US state economy.

  • IC-rated for direct insulation contact (required)
  • Air-tight (AT) rating for California Title 24
  • Fire-rated assemblies (1-hour typical ceiling rating)
  • Integrated J-box required by most US electrical codes
  • California JA8: CRI ≥ 90, efficacy ≥ 90 lm/W
  • Wet location rating for bathrooms (UL 1598)

EU Difference: IP ratings prioritized (IP20-IP65). External driver common. IC rating less emphasized. EN 60598-2-2 standard.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between ETL and UL certification?
ETL and UL both test to the same UL standards (UL 1598, UL 8750, etc.). ETL is a division of Intertek and offers faster turnaround (4-6 weeks vs 8-12 weeks) at lower cost. Both marks are equally accepted by AHJs across the US and Canada. The choice depends on your timeline, budget, and customer requirements.
How long does ETL certification take?
Typical timeline is 4-6 weeks from sample submission to certificate issuance. This includes safety testing, factory audit (IPI), and report review. Pre-certification design review can reduce redesign risk and prevent delays. Rush service is available for urgent launches.
What is DLC Premium and why does it matter?
DLC (DesignLights Consortium) Premium is a higher tier of energy efficiency qualification. It requires ≥140 lm/W efficacy for high bay, ≥125 lm/W for panels. DLC Premium unlocks the largest utility rebates — typically $10-50 per fixture depending on the state and utility program. Without DLC, your product is ineligible for most US rebate programs.
Do I need California Title 24 / JA8 compliance?
If you sell into California — the largest US state economy — Title 24 compliance is mandatory for new construction and major renovations. JA8 requires high efficacy (≥90 lm/W for <18W, ≥80 lm/W for ≥18W) and CRI ≥ 90. Non-compliant products cannot be installed in California buildings permitted after 2022.
Can one product design serve both North America and Europe?
Partially. The LED module and thermal design can often be shared, but several components must be market-specific: input voltage (120-277V vs 220-240V), dimming protocol (0-10V vs DALI-2), driver certification (UL Class 2 vs SELV), and labeling (FTC Lighting Facts vs EU Energy Label). We design platform products with swappable components to minimize SKU duplication.
